THE SUN HANGS LOW

Synopsis

This collection speaks to the fleeting glimpses and passing thoughts between every destination. It adds color to the landmarks along Iceland’s Ring Road: the world’s greatest road trip for 828 miles (1,332 km). 31 entries span seven December days given just four hours of daylight. Enjoy prose, folklore, travel tips, photography, and more. This is Volume II in the Poems Across Iceland series.

WINTER WONDERLAND

Few places can offer such extremes in beauty. Many swear they can feel the ground moving undermeath them. Glaciers crawl over simmering volcanoes. You can hike or scuba dive where the North American and European tectonic plates are separating. You can relax in a 100% natural silica spa at Blue Lagoon or take a private dip in local geothermal hot spots throughout the countryside. And of course, the dark mountain ranges and dramatic waterfalls are stunning.

REYKJAVÍK, UNESCO CITY

Iceland’s capital is one of just 20 cities recognized in the UNESCO City of Literature program. There’s a bookstore every few blocks. Icelanders are willing to pay the equivalent of $50-$100 USD for a book. Many have written poetry. It’s also a UNESCO Creative City. The streets are colorful, with large-scale murals. Local crafts populate most storefronts. Live music pours from bars and clubs most nights. One of the world’s most anticipated music festivals is Iceland Airwaves.

From the Author

“I’m often asked: why in the world would anyone visit Iceland? When I say my wife and I would move there in a heartbeat, they’re incredulous. The Arctic nation has an undeniable draw. It’s a magnet for creative souls. The history is remarkable. This is the land of Vikings and sagas, after all. The vibrance in isolation is surprising.”
